What is PTA purified terephthalic acid?

2025-04-08

PTA is called purified terephthalic acid in Chinese. It is a white powdery crystal at room temperature, non-toxic and flammable. If mixed with air, it will burn when exposed to fire within a certain limit. Purified terephthalic acid uses paraxylene as raw material and is also an important raw material for the chemical fiber industry. Currently, more than 75% of the global PX production capacity and demand are concentrated in Asia.

PTA Purified Terephthalic Acid

1. Production process of PTA purified terephthalic acid

PTA purified terephthalic acid is produced from petroleum. Petroleum is processed to produce light gasoline, mixed xylene is extracted from light gasoline, and then paraxylene is extracted. Using acetic acid as solvent and PX as raw material, it is oxidized under the action of a catalyst to produce crude terephthalic acid, which is then refined and impurities are removed to finally generate purified terephthalic acid products.

2. Uses of PTA purified terephthalic acid products

PTA purified terephthalic acid is an organic raw material, which is widely used in light industry, electronics industry, construction industry, etc. A lot of PTA is used to produce polyester fiber, that is, polyester, which belongs to synthetic fiber. Synthetic fiber manufacturing industry is also the largest and most branched industry in the chemical fiber industry. This also shows that the use of PTA purified terephthalic acid is very wide.

The raw material of PTA purified terephthalic acid is PX, which comes from petroleum. PTA for polyester accounts for 75% of the total, and 78% of chemical fiber is polyester, that is, chemical fiber raw material PTA.
